Boston Pete’s interview with Darling Down guitarist Dustin Claud.
Boston Pete: I just like to thank you for taking the time to do this interview. I appreciate it.
Band: No, thank you!! We are honored!!
Boston Pete: How did the band come together?
Band: Band formed in 2008 in Marshall MI after the drummer (Ryan) responded to an ad at a local music store. When Amanda answered the phone, Ryan recognized her voice because they had attended high school together a few years before. They scheduled a jam session.
Boston Pete: How did you come to go by name the name Darling Down, any meaning to it?
Band: At one of the first practices…before the band was really a band….while the band was trying to come up with a name Ryan received a call from a good friend. He said “Darling, why are you so Down” and we thought “Darling Down” was a great mix of femininity and darkness (although we’re really not
Boston Pete: The band recently released the video for “Never Tell”, were you happy how it came out
Band: More than happy!! Everyone that was involved work very hard on it and we’re confident that it
Boston Pete: How was it working with Travis Ross?
Band: He was a huge pain in the ass….kidding, of course. Couldn’t have asked for a better film producer for this project. His vision was directly in line with ours and kept us all on task.
Boston Pete: The song is off the album of the same name, “Never Tell”, what was the writing process
Band: The song was written with a movie plot in mind (which made the video a little easier). The premise is that everyone has secrets, some of which, you’ll take to the grave.
Boston Pete: The album has guest appearances from Clint Lowery of Sevendust, Stephen of Taproot (My favorite band), and more. How did getting these guys to appear?
Band: We asked them We were very confident in the albums quality and the songs that made the cut. We got to a point where we needed to fill a couple bridges with either vocal work or guitar and we thought “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if people we looked up to helped?” So we asked. Everyone that we asked agreed to help and we’re VERY pleased with their additions.
Boston Pete: So you have some tour dates coming up, what can people that have not seen you yet
Band: We are a band that loves to have fun. We’re not the typical stuffy rock band that gets on stage and just blast through the same set of songs every night. We’ve learned that if we’re having fun on stage, that that translates to the crowd in an infectious way.
Boston Pete: What are some of the things you guys like to do to kill time while driving to next venue or
Band: We try to network. We reach out to folks via social media – we try to get radio stations/newspapers for the upcoming dates involved/interested….and of course there’s a fair amount of sleeping and Candy Crush (or whatever the latest app is).
Boston Pete: For new bands, have you learned lesson on touring that you wished you now knew before
Band: Prepare as much as you can but just get out there and do it. No unsigned, self-funded/managed band is truly ready their first time. We hesitated for years and since expanding our radius it’s helped more than you can know.
Boston Pete: I‘d like to thank you again for taking the time to do this. Any last words to your fans?
Band: Thank you for the interview!! If you’re reading this and you haven’t checked out the new video yet, please do so and let us know what you think. Follow us on twitter, Instagram, and interact with us at
